Miracle at Philadelphia by Catherine Drinker Bowen

This classic "biography" of the American Constitution gives you a feel for the personalities and place in the historic months of May-Sept. 1787. If you haven't read any of Catherine Drinker Bowen's books, you should. Her biographies of Benjamin Franklin and Oliver Wendell Holmes are also superb.
