How Far She Went by Mary Hood
Mary Hood won the Flannery O’Connor Award for
this collection of short stories, and O’Connor’s influence is apparent although
without the satiric bite. Each story has a uniquely southern flavor, and the
sense of place permeates the works. The title story is particularly stirring in
its depiction of a stolid grandmother and her rebellious granddaughter’s uneasy
coming to terms.
