Goddesses, Whores, Wives, and Slaves: Women in Classical Antiquity by Sarah B. Pomeroy

If you love history, especially Greek & Roman, you will appreciate the depth of the research that has preceded the writing of the book. If you are a women's studies student, you'll appreciate the recitation of the spectrum of roles filled by women in "ancient times." I suggest, however, that unless you are a student of Greek & Roman history or if you have a tremendous memory for all the history you learned in high school, you read the book with a laptop or encyclopedia close by, so you can look up all the people and places named in the'll make the reading much more comprehensible.
