A Good School by Richard Yates

If you've never read Richard Yates, I recommend Revolutionary Road (the Kate Winslet & Leoanardo DiCaprio movie was based on that novel) and Eleven Kinds of Loneliness (an earlier short story collection). A Good School is a quick read and would make a good movie, as it's filled with distinctive characters, poignant anecdotes, and a setting--a boys' prep school during WWII-- that contains it all. If you're looking for a protagonist or a theme, that's a little difficult to discern, as the reader is positioned more as an interloper hanging out with the characters, who are inexplicably cruel at times, often jockeying for position, and unexpectedly kind too.
