The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler

Ah ha! The source material for many of the homages to the hard-boiled detective with which we are so familiar! Told in the first person, the novel follows whiskey-swilling detective Philip Marlowe on a case of blackmail that unravels into much more. In addition to the twisting plots and descriptions of 1930s Los Angeles, I found Marlowe’s dark sense of humor to be a compelling element in this highly enjoyable page turner.
