The Waiting Years by Fumiko Enchi
From the moment that Tomo is introduced, searching for a concubine for her husband, this novel unfolds as a study in repressed emotions. Tomo, her husband Yukitomo, and the concubine Suga, all keep their true feelings in check as they bow to the force of a centuries-long code. This novel is a wonderful depiction of the subtle power of women in a male-dominated world.
