As a fan of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series, my expectations were undoubtedly high for Douglas Adams’ other work involving a rather brilliant, admittedly quirky, holistic detective named Dirk Gently. Without giving away too much, the book follows Dirk as he investigates the mysterious murder of a computer mogul…oh and did I mention there’s time travel, a robot monk and spaceships? While I enjoyed Adams’ trademark comical prose, the pacing during the first half of the book felt slow and then overcompensated with a sprint to the finish line at the end.
