John D. Rockefeller Vol. 1 by Allan Nevins

This stand-alone volume is both a character study of the original Rockefeller and a history of the U.S. oil industry. Rockefeller excelled in the type of corporate combination we now see in Microsoft, for example. Nevins is a superb social historian of the Civil War and the industrialization of the US in the 19th century.
