Tim O'Brien served in Viet Nam from 1968 - 1970. In this work of fiction, the author amalgamates his experiences and memories of the war into 22 short stories with themes of cowardice, guilt, shame, fear, cruelty, and death found throughout. Though these short stories are meant to be read collectively in order to fully understand the experiences of war, each individual story has an object lesson that leads the reader into the depths of the author's experiences and forces them to come to grips with the brutal and unforgiving realities of war.
